Contracting with Subjective Evaluations and Communication

چکیده
Should principals explain and justify their evaluations? In this paper the principal’s evaluation is private information, but she can provide some justifications by sending a costly message. Indeed, it is optimal for the principal to explain her evaluation to the agent if and only if the evaluation turns out to be bad. The justification guarantees the agent that the principal has not distorted the evaluation downwards. On the equilibrium path, as long as the principal provides a justification, the wage increases in the performance of the agent. For good performances, however, the principal pays a given high wage without providing justifications. This wage pattern fits empirical observations that subjective evaluations are lenient and discriminate poorly between good performances. I show that this pattern is part of the optimal contract instead of biased behavior. Furthermore, it is possible to implement the optimal contract in an ex-post budget-balanced way if stochastic contracts are feasible. JEL classifications: D82, D86, J41, M52

Optimal Efficiency-Wage Contracts with Subjective Evaluation
We study a T -period contracting problem where performance evaluations are subjective and private. We find that the principal should punish the agent if he performs poorly in the future even when the evaluations were good in the past, and, at the same time, the agent should be given opportunities to make up for poor performance in the past by performing better in the future. Thus, optimal incen...

A consensually-agreed position among scholars of communication and aging is that while psychological and physical health mutually impact each other, the quality of language to and from older adult individuals shape each of these—and are shaped by them. Encounters with others inside and outside of one’s age ingroup involve stereotyped expectations with regard to language and other speec...
متن کاملWhat Do We Learn From Self-Evaluations of Training? A Comparison of Subjective and Objective Evaluations
Self-evaluations of program impact, notably subjective evaluations of the e¤ects of training, are wide-spread in both the public and the private sector probably because self-evaluations o¤er an easy and low-cost alternative to rigorous experimental or econometric evaluations. In this paper, I analyze how subjective assessments of satisfaction with training compare to objective measures based ...
متن کاملExtended ratio edge detector for despeckled SAR image evaluation
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images due to the usage of coherent imaging systems are affected by speckle. So lots of despeckling filters have been introduced up to now to suppress the speckle. Hence, objective and subjective evaluation of the denoised SAR images becomes a necessity. Thereby lots of objective evaluating estimators are introduced to evaluate the performance of despeckling filte...
متن کاملApplications using Earphone with Biosignal Sensors
We propose novel ways of interactions using biosignals. We developed a prototype earphone with three kinds of biosignal sensors: pulse wave, electromyogram (EMG) and acceleration sensors. Using this sensor system, we implemented three new applications automatic music selection, tactile and visual communication and automatic metadata annotation. We also present results of preliminary subjective ...
